216-2017 ASU Tempe Campus, Bateman Physical Sciences F-Wing

Located on the second floor of the Bateman Physical Sciences F-Wing, the two phased Bio-XFEL laboratory remodel project consisted of an initial phase of an injector lab and associated support spaces for the new Bio-XFEL location.  The second phase consisted of a fluoroscopy lab and main lab suite consisting of two cooler sample rooms, sample prep, nanocrystal room and an outreach training room.

Locating the labs on the second floor of a mid century steel frame building presented vibration challenges that had to be remedied to meet the required stiffness for the type of research done in phase two.  Columns were required to be added from the second floor structure to the third floor structure in order to create a truss out of the structure of the two floors.

Lighting control was critical for the experiments in the main BioXFEL lab.  Certain frequency lighting needed to be utilized along with control of all potential light bleed of different frequencies.  This was accomplished by specifying the use of a specific light fixture over the work plane and other light control strategies.
